Hinoki, Japanese cypress tree, is a species of cypress native to central Japan.

It is a slow growing tree which grows to 35m tall with a trunk up to 1 metre in diameter.  The bark is dark red-brown.  The leaves are scale-like, 2-4mm long, blunt tipped (obtuse), green above, and green below with a white stomatal band at the base of each scale-leaf.  The wood is lemon-scented, light pinkish brown, with rich, straight grain, and it is highly rot-resistant.

Hinoki tree is wide spread in Japan.  It is grown for its very high quality timber in Japan, where it is used as a material for building palaces, shrines, traditional Japanese theatres, and other smaller items such as bath tubs, table tennis blades, chopsticks and masu cups (square cups used to measure rice and other items).

Hinoki also produces essential oils.  They are extracted from wood by stream distillation.

Hinoki has a rich and invigorating citrus aroma.  It is energizing and uplifting to the mind.  It also releases agitation from the mind and body, and promote peace of mind.

If you are looking for something different, Japanese Zen-like aroma, we recommend you try Hinoki.
